Families in Kenya use Solio to power their entire home. From replacing kerosene to run LED lights, to keeping radio’s playing, to charging cell phones. We’ve learned to make durable, reliable solar chargers – because people depend on us!
We also have a business in Kenya where we lease our Solio solar chargers, much like you pay for cable TV in North America. This program has been quite a success. Here are two Solio user stories from Kenya:
Solio is helping me save money on daily kerosene expenses. I want to use these savings to start buying and selling vegetables. I no longer buy any kerosene, I use Solio for all my nighttime activities. I only have grandchildren in my household and they really enjoy the light Solio gives them. As I got older, my eyes became more irritated by the smoke of the kerosene lantern. I like Solio because it has eliminated these harmful fumes.

Here in our Oakland, CA headquarters we have made a commitment: To only charge our work phones with energy from the sun! How do we do that you ask?
When we moved our HQ from Berkeley to Oakland back in March 2011, we decided to move away from the traditional office desk phone set-up. Instead, all employees received iPhones. Through an application called RingCentral, our iPhones act exactly as normal office phones do – we can transfer calls, have extensions, and can even answer calls directed to a certain department. The freedom is awesome.
To take things a bit further, we decided as a team to use our Solio chargers to keep our new office phones juiced up! Each employee now has two Solio chargers, which rotate from charging in the sun, to charging our phones at our desk. Over the past few months we really have the system down, and all of our neighbors have gotten used to seeing all of our Solio chargers soaking up the sun on a daily basis. It’s quite a sight!
